Belzona Cold Repair Solution for High-Temperature Corrosion in Food Industry Steam Cooker
A prominent food manufacturing unit in India faced a critical issue with its steam cooker top cover, a crucial component in their food processing operations. The steam cooker’s top cover had suffered from high-temperature corrosion, with constant exposure to steam at 130°C. Traditional repair methods were deemed time-consuming, costly, and posed safety risks, prompting the client to seek a cold-applied solution to restore the equipment.
The Belzona Solution:
Our experienced service engineer recommended Belzona’s high-performance industrial paste-grade composite to efficiently restore the steam cooker top within a minimal outage window, thus saving substantial costs compared to equipment replacement. For future protection a coating was installed over the rebuilt equipment.
Pitting Repair and Surface Preparation:
Our service engineer found the inner wall of the steam cooker had lost surface integrity due to high-temperature corrosion. (As seen in the above pictures)
In this case our service engineer choose Belzona 1511 which is a heat-resistant epoxy paste designed for repairing and rebuilding areas damaged by corrosion or erosion at elevated temperatures.
Surface Preparation:
Surface preparation was done by Grit blasting to Swedish Standard Sa2½ with a minimum profile of 3 mils. And maintaining environmental conditions adhering to the Belzona Instructions for Use (IFU).
Mixing:
Belzona 1511 mixed at a metric ratio of five parts base to one part solidifier, achieving a uniform streak-free grey color.
Application:
An Initial layer was applied with a brush, followed by rebuilding with more product using a Belzona applicator to restore the surface to its original profile. Even spread to cover the entire damaged area.
Curing: Belzona 1511 left to cure for 4 hours, forming a strong and durable repair.
Belzona 1593: Overcoat Application:
Belzona 1593, a 2-part hand-applied epoxy coating designed to provide long-term corrosion and chemical resistance to equipment operating in continuous immersion at temperatures up to 160°C (320°F). This coating has a long overcoat window and its cold curing mechanism with full in-service cure reduces downtime and ensures rapid return of equipment to service.
This solvent-free coating is easy to mix and apply without the need for specialist tools, ensuring a simple and safe application in confined areas.
Since the previous application of Belzona 1511 had a 24 hour over coat window, during this time Belzona 1593 was applied with no additional surface preparation. Using a brush or Belzona applicator, the product was applied directly onto the prepared surface, ensuring a consistent coating.
Completion: The steam cooker was ready to be put back into service after the 24-hour curing period.
